Granny Smith apples are great for this dessert. So are Honeycrisp. But use your favourite kind OR try mixing varieties for an unexpected twist!

- 6 to 8medium to large apples, unpeeled, cored and cut into medium-sized chunks
- 1 cupall-purpose flour*
- ¼ cupoats*

You will also need: Slow cooker, and cooking spray (optional)
I use a slow cooker similar to this.

* Check on any food sensitivities or allergies that need to be considered. Gluten is in all-purpose flour, and it can hide in oats. Gluten-free flour and gluten-free oats are readily available at most grocery stores.
Method
- If you are using a non-stick cooking spray, coat the interior of the slow cooker.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. This is your topping.
- Bring the apples and the topping together, one of two ways: Either place the apples in the slow cooker and pour the topping over them. Or toss the apples and the topping together in a large mixing bowl, then add all of it to the slow cooker. (I like doing it this way.)
- Top with butter that has been cut into pieces or melted.
- Cook on high for 2 hours OR cook on low for 4 hours.
- Adjust the temperature setting to “warm” if the dessert course is still a few hours away.
- Serve warm with a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream (or how about butterscotch swirl?).
